Maryland is changing how some drivers towing trailers are billed on state toll roads starting January 1st. Under a new law, the Maryland Transportation Authority can use the rear license plate on a trailer or semitrailer when cameras cannot capture the plate on the vehicle towing it. Officials stress this is not a new toll, and drivers will not be charged twice. Toll rates will continue to be based on the number of axles, and officials are encouraging trailer owners to make sure their vehicle and trailer information is up to date on their E-Z Pass accounts.
